The Scarlet Scale was developed in 2019 specifically for use in emergency rooms to help nurses potentially identify persons being sexually exploited. It was created by listening to survivors tell their stories and tallying the common denominators.
Combating Human Sex Trafficking in the Healthcare sector
Human sex trafficking is a growing global problem requiring a multifaceted approach to stop its expansion and the associated slavery. The healthcare system can actively participate in this effort, potentially improving patient outcomes for those being commercially sexually exploited. The current standard of care—asking, "Are you safe in your home?"—has proven inadequate for identifying victims of human sex trafficking.
